Cultured Meat

What is Cultured Meat?

Cultured or Cell-Based meat is created by painlessly harvesting muscle cells from a living animal. Scientists then feed and nurture the cells so they multiply to create muscle tissue, which is the main component of the meat we eat. It is a form of cellular agriculture.  Cultured meat is produced using many of the same tissue engineering techniques used in regenerative medicine.  The meat cultured using these techniques is biologically the same as meat from an animal.  Once cultured meat becomes commercially viable, many Americans may decide to replace their current meat choices with cultured meat.

Cultured Meat for Health?

People eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) who replace their current meat with cultured meat will very likely have the same high risk of developing common chronic diseases (ex. heart disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune disorders, various cancers).

David Welch Ph.D concedes this, however he makes a strong case for cultured meat from a public health perspective.

I encourage you to watch this eight minute video segment of Dotsie Bausch and Alexandra Paul’s interview of Dr. Welch.
