Dr. William Li on Cancer Stem Cells
William W. Li, MD is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker and author. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. Dr. Li’s groundbreaking work has impacted more than seventy diseases, including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity.
Dr. Li has just released a diet book entitled “Eat To Beat Disease” and after reading the first two chapters, I decided to write this short blog to announce the book’s release.
In this book, Dr. Li shares his great knowledge of our body’s natural defense systems and he shares evidence for food as medicine. Readers who follow a 100% plant-based diet should be forewarned that Dr. Li includes small amounts of specific animal foods as potentially having some health-promoting properties. However, the vast majority of foods in the book are whole plant foods.
Because I’ve only read the first two chapters and have skimmed other chapters, this blog article is not a book review. But I didn’t want to wait before completing the book before letting people know of its existence. The book contains some important, perhaps even life-saving, information for some people. In particular people who are being treated for cancer or have a history of cancer.
Cancer Stem Cells
Dr. Li explains how eating to boost our normal stem cells is a good thing. However, he mentions that not all stem cells are your friend. We don’t want to boost cancer stem cells. He states “If you have cancer, or have ever had it, your number one focus should be to kill those cancer stem cells. There is no medicine that can do this yet, but there are a growing number of foods that are being studied for their suppressive effects on cancer stem cells.” He adds “Fortunately, foods that target cancer stem cells do not harm beneficial stem cells”.
