Handling Social Booby Traps
I recently spoke with a colleague who appears ready to try a 21 – day whole food plant based (WFPB) diet challenge. One of her biggest concerns is how she will handle the negative reactions she expects from some friends and relatives. This is a legitimate concern.
Everyone who attempts a transition to a WFPB diet will struggle to escape and remain clear of the Dietary Pleasure Trap. I wrote this short article about the Dietary Pleasure Trap a few years back. The Dietary Pleasure Trap is a powerful force, and unfortunately, some people never escape it. But for the fortunate person who is able to keep the dietary pleasure trap at bay, there is another psychological trap brought on by social pressure that can sabotage one’s effort to live a chronic disease-free life.
Dr. Doug Lisle – Getting Along Without Going Along
When my colleague expressed her concern about how to handle a variety of social situations, I agreed with her that she had every reason to be concerned. I also almost immediately thought of psychologist Dr. Doug Lisle’s presentation entitled “Getting Along Without Going Along” that I attended during Plant Stock 2016.
Dr. Lisle has a video of this presentation on his web site that he recorded a few year’s prior to 2016. I decided to watch the video and I’m glad I did. I had forgotten a lot of the fascinating information Dr. Lisle shares about how human beings are hard-wired to react in various social situations. He shares ground breaking sociological experiments that reveal human behavioral responses that are flat out startling.
The knowledge he shares and the tips he provides can help people get through some social traps that can ensnare folks often by surprise. The key is to be prepared for these surprises. If you are new to a WFPB diet or if you are an old pro who still struggles during some social encounters, I strongly encourage you to watch Dr. Lisle’s video. In my opinion, it is the best way for you to learn how to properly prepare yourself to handle common social booby traps that will spring up on you.
