Review of “Thin Diabetes, Fat Diabetes” by Laurie Endicott Thomas

In his December 2015 newsletter, Dr. John McDougall strongly endorses Laurie Endicott Thomas’s book “Thin Diabetes, Fat Diabetes”.   Although Dr. McDougall’s opinion holds an awfully large amount of weight with me, my initial thought was that I probably wouldn’t purchase the book. I figured that at best, the book would be a review of information that I already knew.

Luckily, I remembered that Laurie Endicott Thomas is the administrator of a great web site called “Gorilla Protein”. Reading just one of her articles will convince you of her knowledge of nutrition and metabolism. I’m especially impressed on how she is able to explain very complex processes in a manner that people can understand.

I purchased the book and I’m very glad that I did. It is incredibly thorough and informative. In addition to being an excellent review, she presents a bunch of information of which I was unaware.

The topics she covers include:

  • The history of diagnostics and treatments of diabetes
  • The different types of diabetes, including the rarer genetic types
  • How insulin and glucagon function
  • The value of fasting
  • Pharmacological treatments of different types of diabetes
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Long-term complications of diabetes
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
  • What low-carb diets really do
  • What foods diabetics should eat

Laurie states in her introduction that her goal in writing the book was to give the reader knowledge about the history and biology of diabetes. She gives the reader enough credit to be able to figure out that the best dietary approach to preventing and treating the different types of diabetes is with a low-fat whole food plant based diet.

So the book “Thin Diabetes, Fat Diabetes” gets a very enthusiastic Plantastic Life Stamp of Approval! If you or a loved one have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, you should seriously consider purchasing this book.
