Revisiting Jacobson’s Squid

I began following a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet on March 15, 2009 – the day after I finished reading The China Study” by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Dr. Tom Campbell. In October of 2013, I stumbled upon a great article with the intriguing title “What a Giant Squid Can Teach Us About Cancer”. The article was written by Howard Jacobson, PhD, co-author of T. Colin Campbell’s second book “Whole: Rethinking The Science of Nutrition” and co-author of Proteinaholic by Garth Davis MD.

I wrote a short blog on October 29, 2013 imploring any visitor to read The China Study if he/she hadn’t already done so. The article was short because it contained a link to Jacobson’s article. I can’t imagine a better advertisement for “The China Study” than the “Giant Squid” article.

I recently discovered that the link from my article to Jacobson’s no longer worked. I tried locating it via a Google search, but had no luck. I emailed Jacobson and asked if he could tell me where I could find it. He sent me a link to a version of the article updated for 2016.

In addition to promoting “The China Study” the article provides clear explanations on:

  • How science is done
  • The difference between causation and correlation
  • 4 problems with The Gold Standard of scientific research when studying human behavior
  • Why it’s hard to prove anything about human health that doesn’t involve a pill or injection.
  • The economic and political forces that keep Americans confused about nutrition
  • Why T.Colin Campbell’s work in China “proves” nothing
  • Why T.Colin Campbell’s work in China and in the laboratory and mountains of other research supports the likely veracity of the following statement:

A WFPB diet promotes health and can prevent and treat many chronic diseases.”

The article concludes with a message of hope and provides you a link to a new website called TriangleBeWell. On this website, you can access the free “Healthcare GPS Report: How to Navigate The Healthcare System Like Your Life Depended On It”.

So take some time to read “What a Giant Squid Can Teach Us About Cancer”.
