“The Happy Herbivore Guide to Plant-Based Living”, by Lindsay Nixon, is a comprehensive look at:
- The benefits of following a whole food plant based (WFPB) diet
- The misconceptions surrounding WFPB diets
- Common objections to following a WFPB diet and
- The biological and social challenges of following a WFPB diet
The book also includes great tips on
- Dining out
- Traveling
- Food budgeting
- Camping and
- Troubleshooting when failing to thrive on a WFPB diet
Lindsay is best known for her recipes and cooking tips and there is no shortage of those in this book. I especially like the numerous one-pot recipes.
Although I’m inclined to believe that this book will be most useful to anyone who is beginning their WFPB journey – I also believe that even the most seasoned WFPB advocate will discover some gems for his/her toolbox.
Testimonials Make This WFPB Guide Unique
Lindsay shares the stories of 21 people from all walks of life. Her interviewing skills allow her “Herbies” to provide more than a superficial description of how they have benefitted from transitioning to a WFPB diet.
Although all of the stories are remarkable, I was glad to see that Lindsay included testimonials of athletes who not only have dramatically improved their health, but continue to maintain or even improve their physical performance in their chosen sport.
If you are an athlete that is reluctant to go the WFPB route, check out some of the WFPB athletes on the “Resources” page on this site – or you can check out these links to five “Herbies of The Week” athletes who are doing very well on fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds If I can’t persuade you to go WFPB, I’m hoping they will.
- Sheldon – retired police officer and plant-based karate champion
- David – once immobile and an addict, now a plant –based bodybuilder
- Aubrey – plant-based high school track star
