This recent NY Times article discusses the latest study comparing a low carb vs. a supposed low-fat diet. It’s just another study that compares two diets that are just slightly better than the abominable Standard American Diet.
This study, as in many previous studies, in no way included a low-fat diet group. The disease reversal successes of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., Dr. Dean Ornish , Nathan Pritikin and Dr. John McDougall resulted from whole food plant based diets that are 10 -15% calories from fat. The average fat content of the low-fat group in this study was just over 29%.
Essestyn, Ornish, Pritikin and McDougal also use whole food plant based diets to reverse disease. The average fiber intake of the low-fat group in this study was a woefully low 15 g per day. Because fiber is only found in whole and minimally processed plant foods, it’s obvious that the members of the low-fat group were consuming diets high in animal foods and highly processed foods – hardly a healthy diet. I strongly encourage you to ignore this study as it will steer you in the wrong direction or just add to your confusion about what diets provide the best protection against chronic diseases.
I also strongly encourage you to read the following articles in response to the NY Times article. These articles explain how studies like this latest one, and mainstream media’s interpretation of such studies, direct people away from a diet that can actually help them get healthy – a whole food plant based diet.
